SPL Technology

A universal method for modulating gene expression

The availability of genome sequences and molecular techniques have in the recent decade opened the door for directed improvement of microorganisms through genetic engineering by perturbing the expression of specific genes in the cell. In most genetic engineering projects, an increasingly important element is the ability to accurately optimise the level of cellular enzyme activities, which can usually be achieved by optimising gene expression.

Fermenco holds a universal technology, the Synthetic Promoter Library (SPL) Technology, which can optimise gene expression in tiny steps and over a very broad range of activities (Fig. 1). The approach is applicable to almost any field, including:

    • Optimising new or already existing metabolic pathways
    • Heterologous production of enzymes and pharmaceuticals
    • Functional genomics and systems biology

The SPL technology enables an easy, accurate and individual optimisation of the expression of numerous genes in a cell.

The approach has been developed for a broad range of microorganisms including various bacteria, yeast and even mammalian cell lines.
